Hyundai Elevator Achieves '5.4 Million Accident-Free Hours' for the First Time in Korea
Hyundai Elevator Achieves '5.4 million accident-free hours' for the first time in the domestic elevator industry Efforts to achieve zero accidents, including the adoption of a five-step company-wide safety inspection system 2013/04 Hyundai Elevator has achieved 5.4 million hours (749 days) of accident-free operation, the highest and longest period among its peers in Korea. Hyundai Elevator celebrated the milestone at its headquarters in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, last month with a ceremony attended by Hyundai Group Chairman Hyun-jeong Hyun, affiliate presidents, Representative Yoo Seung-woo, Chairman Baek Hun-ki of the Korea Safety and Health Institute under the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Icheon Mayor Cho Byeong-don, and Korea Elevator Safety Management Institute President Gong Chang-seok. The Zero Accident Campaign is a campaign organized by the Korea Safety and Health Institute to eradicate industrial accidents and calculates the period of time according to the industry and scale, and Hyundai Elevator has achieved 5.4 million hours without a single accident from January 18, 2011 to February 6, 2013, with more than 1,200 employees working for more than 700 days. This is the longest period of time among the 30,000 companies in the mechanical equipment manufacturing industry with more than 500 employees in Korea participating in the campaign, and the first in the domestic elevator industry, according to Hyundai Elevator. "We have established this record by overhauling our safety system with the goal of creating a healthy workplace free of industrial accidents, mandating safety training for all employees for more than 35 hours a year, conducting joint safety inspections with labor and management, and operating voluntary accident prevention programs," said an official from Hyundai Elevator. Hyundai Elevator has been certified for achieving zero accidents by establishing a 'company-wide safety inspection five-step system' to prevent accidents in the production, installation, and maintenance of elevators, escalators, moving walks, logistics automation systems, and parking systems. In addition, Hyundai Elevator has trained safety managers for each department, conducted experiential training involving more than 40 suppliers, operated an accident prevention system during maintenance and repair work, and provided first aid training such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation. As a result, Hyundai Elevator has achieved zero accidents compared to the 0.2 to 0.3 percent accident rate of its peers in the machinery and equipment industry, saving about 1 billion won in annual workers' compensation insurance premiums. At the ceremony, Hyundai Group Chairman Hyun-jung Hyun said, "It means more to me that our employees have worked safely without a single accident than the word 'best'." Han Sang-ho, CEO of Hyundai Elevator, said, "We will continue to be an accident-free workplace with a thoroughness that does not allow even a 1% error in safety, and we will do our best to ensure the safety of our customers." Meanwhile, Hyundai Elevator also held the opening ceremony of the Hyundai Customer Care Center (CCC) in conjunction with the ceremony to celebrate the achievement of 540 hours of accident-free operation. The CCC, which is the first state-of-the-art customer care center in Korea to be equipped with a geographic information system (GIS), was reopened on the same day after renovating internal facilities and improving equipment, and will now provide next-level services such as 24/7 fault reception and handling, remote control, and fault handling through Hyundai Real Time Service (HRTS), a real-time remote management system. |
